An ambulance was called to a rural property at 6.16pm on Monday.

The girl was taken to Longreach Base Hospital in a critical condition but later died.

It's understood police are not treating the girl's death as suspicious, The Northern Star reports.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

In the 12 months to mid 2016, 280 people drowned in Australian waterways with rivers, creeks and streams.

Of those, 58 drowned while swimming in inland waterways.
