WATCH: Furious cop berates woman for leaving children in hot car

A video has emerged of a Canadian police officer berating a woman for leaving her young children in a hot car.

In the footage, the officer says to the woman: "You don't seem to understand that your children could have died".

The video was shot in Vancouver by a passerby in a shopping centre car park earlier this week.

Multiple people called the police after noticing two young children locked in a car by themselves in the parking lot.

Vancouver Police Chief Adam Palmer has since said that the Ministry of Children and Families is now involved in the case after the children were left in the car for an unspecified amount of time.

In the video the mother appears to try to explain her actions, but the cop interrupts her and asks: "Why are you arguing?".

“You want me to seize your kids and you’ll never see them again?”

When passersby noticed the car, the alarm was going off and the windows were closed.

Another video on social media shows other shoppers confronting the woman when she returns to the car.

She tells them that the sunroof was tilted open and she had only left the children for five minutes.

Witnesses in the video can be heard saying they had been standing and waiting for her near the car for 20 minutes.

A handful of people then stand in front and behind the car stopping the mum from driving away before the police arrive.

Police got the six-year-old girl and three-year-old boy out of the car when they arrived.

They were both dehydrated and were treated at the scene, but did not need to go to hospital.

Police Chief Palmer said the officer in the video is a highly respected cop who has kids of his own and was concerned for the children's safety.

No charges have been laid.
