Win for Pauline Hanson as her halal food labelling campaign gains momentum

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson is gaining momentum in her campaign to get halal-certified foods more clearly labelled.

Mail Online reports that Hanson has been backed by her Senate colleagues, with a motion passed on a show of voices in the Senate.

This could push Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to look at ways to regulate food manufacturers, and implement more clearly labeled third-party halal certification.

Halal certification involves the use of a licensed marker to indicate that a food is approved for consumption under Islamic religious rules.

Currently many meats and popular supermarket products including Vegemite, Cadbury chocolates and Kellogg’s breakfast cereals have halal certification.

Senator Hanson told parliament Australians were “waiting for this to be implemented”, following a 2015 inquiry into halal foods.

Australian Conservatives senator Cory Bernardi, who initiated the inquiry, said the meat industry needed to he held accountable.

“They’re looking for certainty in the meat industry, it’s about time they reported on it,” he said.

At Easter Hanson urged her supporters to buy "non-halal" Easter eggs and avoid brands that offer halal-certified products in a Facebook video.

The plea was in line with the party's stance that buying halal-certified products equates to "financially supporting the Islamisation of Australia".

“One of the biggest complaints I have had since being elected is about halal-certification and it was my promise to you that I would do something about it,” the video posted by the politician begins.

“Guess what? It’s Easter. A special time of the year for a lot of people and families,” she continues.
