US chain claims to invent sausage rolls, causes outrage

A US supermarket chain has caused an international outcry after it claimed to invent a new summer snack, which looks suspiciously like a sausage roll.

Trader Joe’s has released a “classic dog-meets-dough pairing,” it says has taken “to the next level” in “perfectly flaky-when-cooked puff pastry”.

The sausage-wrapped snack, the Puff Dog, has received a less than impressed reaction across the pond.

UK-based paper the Mirror came up with the headline: “Sausage roll given ridiculous new name after American supermarket 'invents summer snack'”.

Twitter users were also quick to slam the snack with a number of tweets claiming the US were a bit behind Europe in "inventing" the baked good.

“Not like the Americans to invent something that has already been around for hundreds of years,” one user tweeted.

“Stupid Americans think they invented the sausage roll, when they've existed since sometime in the nineteenth century!” another one tweeted.

UK bakery Greggs reportedly sells 2.5 million sausage rolls a year.
