The opening of the Treble Cone ski field near Wanaka is delayed because it hasn't been cold enough to make enough snow.

"Due to some unusually warm temperatures over the past week, the home basin has insufficient snow cover and unfortunately the 2017 season will be postponed," the operator says on social media on Tuesday.

"So get snow dancing, snow praying for a snowy start."

Treble Cone was due to open on Thursday with the season running until October 1.

It's hoped freezing levels will drop during the week, allowing for more snow-making.

Treble Cone is the largest ski field in the Queenstown Southern Lakes District, accessing 550ha of rideable terrain.

Coronet Peak and The Remarkables near Queenstown and Mt Hutt in Canterbury are already open.
