Australian man breaks out of Bali jail

An Australian man is among a number of inmates who have escaped from a jail in Bali.

Shaun Edward Davidson, 33, has escaped from Kerobokan Prison with three others.

It follows his arrest for using a fake passport.

Davidson is believed to have travelled to Indonesia in January 2015, the same day he was due to appear in Perth Magistrate's Court on drug offences, including possessing a prohibited drug with the intent to sell or supply.

He was serving a 12-month sentence after being convicted in September last year of using fraudulent documents and fined $10,000.

Reuters reports the head of the prison Tony Nainggolan said the men dug their way out through a tunnel only 40cm in diameter.

"The tunnel is about 12 metres long and we suspect it took more than a week to build," Nainggolan said, adding that police had launched a search and believed the men were still in Bali and not far from the prison.

Balipost has named the other prisoners as Dimitar Nikolov Iliev, 43, from Bulgaria, Indian man Sayed Mohammed Said, 31, and Malaysian man Tee Kok Ming, 50.

Authorities believe the men escaped around 6.30am local time Monday morning.
