'Dream come true': Together for 30 years, elderly couple celebrate commitment

A Queensland couple together for more than 30 years has today celebrated their love for each other at a commitment ceremony.

But a health issue meant the happy couple, who live at a Churches of Christ Care care home in Bongaree, couldn't be legally married.

However, the staff at the home arranged a special day for the couple and today Alice Perkins, 74, was given away to a man she gave her heart to long ago.

"It is a dream come true, yes," Alice said.

Family and friends gathered to celebrate a love that's lasted three decades.

Churches of Christ Care Coordinator Colleen Rawson said: "Alice's dream was always to marry Harry before he passes away".

But 89-year old Harry Sibley suffers from dementia, which that means he can't legally be married.

Harry and Alice were engaged 20 years ago, and today their promise to each other was finally fulfilled.

To make it extra special for the couple the staff at the care home arranged everything from baking the cake to organising the ceremony, even donating the wedding dress.

"We just love them. Do anything for them," Ms Rawson said.
