Hot air balloon crashes moments after mid air proposal

It is a mid-air marriage proposal story that won't be easily forgotten, after the hot air balloon ride where the groom-to-be popped the question ends in dramatic fashion.

According to reports, the hot air balloon got caught in a downdraft on May 27, near Edmonton, Alberta before it crashed into some trees and had to make an emergency landing.

Stephen Martin had proposed to Christine Peters, and she said yes, during the flight just prior to the descent.

The couple were on board with 10 other passengers and the pilot, WTOL reports.

One passenger, Jeffrey Scott, captured the terrifying ordeal on camera.

He can be heard in the video saying a tree had come through the basket near him.

Mr Scott told Storyful, "the pilot did everything in his power to arrest the descent, however, the balloon collided with some trees. "

CTV News Edmonton reports that the pilot fired up the burner to get them out of a tree, before it struck another tree.

“We went into another tree and then we snapped that tree off and then we went into the farmer’s field,” Mr Martin said.

The balloon reportedly dragged for 30 to 60 metres.

In the video, the balloon then comes to a stop and the passengers are told not to move and to hold on, as it appears to fall onto its side.

Those on board cheer as they appear relieved to be safe and on the ground.

Reports claim no one was injured.

"Looking at it now, I'm actually glad we went out because it was kind of like an adventure," Mr Martin told WTOL.

"And plus seeing how I proposed to her, it makes for an awesome story."
