Cat food accused of killing 20 felines, dozens more critically ill

An estimate 20 cats have been allegedly killed by a popular brand of cat food that was stripped from Pet Barn shelves earlier this month.

Cat lovers are now demanding answers after the Best Feline Friend canned cat food line allegedly caused a growing number of family pets to fall gravely ill and die.

Support group member Jenny Ackland said her 12-month-old cat died after eating the BFF cat food line in the weeks leading up to Easter.

“It all happened in stages, first he seemed lethargic, then he went off his food and then he became desperately ill,” she said.

“It’s been three weeks since the Weruva BFF cat food recall occurred and cat owners from around Australia whose cats became ill or died are still awaiting confirmation of the cause.

“Every day there are new reports established in our social media support group that show yet more cats have passed away or have been euthanized.”

Australian Veterinary Association confirmed they were now investigating numerous vet complaints about the product.

Spokeswoman Rena Richmond said the neurological damage is possibly linked to the toxicity of pet food or deficiency.

“If your cat is exhibiting signs such as strange head or eye movements, wobbling, repeated circling or difficulty in walking you should take it to your vet for assessment,” she told the Herald Sun.

The BFF range is made in the US and distributed through Petbarn outlets across the country, but has since been pulled from the shelves.
