Parents open up on daughter's addiction after overdose death

The parents of a 20-year-old woman, who reportedly died after a long battle with heroin addiction, are hoping her death will open a discussion into understanding and discussing drug abuse.

Zoë Conley of Illinois in the US was found unconscious in her home about 5.30am on May 24, according to The Belleville News-Democrat.

She was rushed to St Joseph’s Hospital, Breese but was pronounced dead.

Her parents, who own and operate local paper The Trenton Sun, are hoping their daughter’s death can educate others.

“If there are going to be fruitful discussions about public measures to fight addiction and especially the scourge of heroin and other opiates, they can only take place with the support of a public that understands the true costs of addiction and is willing to invest in treating it,” the family said in the statement.

In a Facebook post, The Trenton Sun paid tribute to Ms Conley and said she had “many attempts at recovery” from addiction.

The Conleys have since been praised for opening up about their daughter’s death.

“Thank you for your honesty about Zoe's (sic) struggles. So many times these awful battles are swept under the rug. I am in awe of your family's strength. My heart goes out to you and your family. Blessings and love to you all,” Heather Sendera commented on Facebook.

Ms Conley’s death is currently the subject of a police investigation.

In Illinois, a person who provides illegal drugs which cause a death, can be charged with drug-induced homicide.
