'It sounded like an explosion': Couple lucky to be alive after taxi slams into bedroom

A Pakenham father says he and his wife came within metres of being killed when a taxi slammed through their bedroom window in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police are investigating whether the driver fell asleep before losing control of the vehicle.

Resident Gabrielle Magda has described the incident like the "beginning of an earthquake".

The out-of-control cab came to rest a metre from the bed Mr Magda and his wife were sleeping in.

The window frame fell on top of them and bricks went flying.

"It was quite scary, I felt quite unsafe," Mr Magda said.

The sound of the 5am smash echoes throughout the neighbourhood.

Neighbour Adam Barkla said it "sounded like an explosion".

"It actually did sound like something had crashed and exploded," he said.

Mr Barkla's letterbox was also a casualty of the incident.

It is believed that the taxi driver was driving home after finishing a twelve-hour shift.

"I think he fell asleep on the wheel and basically just went through," Mr Magda said.

The driver was not injured and neither were the Magdas and their two children.
