A chef at a US takeaway restaurant has been arrested and charged with assault after footage emerged of an employee appearing to become violent over burnt chicken nuggets.

CCTV footage shows a man grabbing a woman's hair from behind while she prepared a meal in the kitchen, believed to be the Red Bowl Asian Bistro in Columbia, South Carolina.

The video shows the man appearing to drag the woman to the ground, while she struggles with her colleague in attempt to fend him off.

Jiguang Yang, 68, was charged with third degree assault and battery last Friday in relation to the incident caught on camera, which happened on April 19.

Yang, a Chinese citizen, is reportedly the father of the restaurant's owner.

Local news reported the waitress, Cristina Surina, was set on by the man after she complained about burnt chicken nuggets she refused to serve to a customer.

Ms Surina told local news the meal was not good enough to give a customer, so she spoke up about it and was attacked.

"The food was burnt, it was a kids meal," she told WIS-TV.

"I didn't feel like I should take out a child burnt chicken nuggets and fried shrimp. I asked the owner. He was in the kitchen at that time to remake it.

"I turned around to start pouring ketchup for the kids' meal and when I was pouring ketchup, his dad came behind me and snatched my head down and I don't know what happened after that."

The waitress, who said she worked at the Red Bowl Asian Bistro for more than five years, lost her job after reporting the incident to police.
