Schapelle Corby came extremely close to death penalty
Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby came extremely close to being shot under the death penalty in Bali but was given the chance to rehabilitate herself instead by the prosecutor.
The 39-year-old, who is due to leave Bali on Saturday, was only spared the death penalty due to her young age, News Corp reports.
Corby was convicted of smuggling 4.1kg of cannabis in a boogie board bag in 2004.
She was sentenced in 2005 with her return home imminent.
It’s understood the prosecutor, Ida Bagus Wiswantan, gave Corby a second chance despite her refusal to admit she was guilty.
"I felt that Corby can still rehabilitate herself so the death sentence is not the punishment. If she got the death sentence she cannot rehabilitate. But I felt that Corby has the chance to fix herself," Wiswantan said.
"For sure it (the death penalty) was discussed."
Corby is expected to be deported from Bali on Saturday.
She was released from prison in 2014 but was unable to leave Indonesia until this month according to parole conditions.
It’s understood she's anxious about returning to Brisbane, mostly due to the media attention she is receiving.
Journalists waiting outside Corby’s Bali villa were shown they weren't welcome this week after they were splashed with a bucket of water.
The incident coincides with a stand-off Corby has been involved in with Indonesian authorities as she has failed to sign papers at the prosecutors office, reportedly due the media skirmish outside her villa.
