Sir Roger Moore has died, aged 89.

The James Bond actor passed away following a battle with cancer, his family confirmed on Tuesday.

“With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated,” they said.

The much-loved English actor passed away in Switzerland.

Moore was best known for playing the third Bond, as well as his roles in The Saint and The Persuaders.

He was also a Unicef goodwill ambassador.

Moore was born in London in 1927 and worked as a model in the early 50s.

"The love with which he was surrounded in his final days was so great it cannot be quantified in words alone," his family wrote.

Moore portrayed Bond on seven occasions, beginning with 1973's Live and Let Die and finishing 12 years later in A View To A Kill.
