'Sharia compliant': Plans for NSW's first Muslims-only cemetery revealed

A Muslims-only cemetery is set to be built on 10 hectares of land in Sydney.

A Chullora-based organisation is behind the plans, believed to be the first Muslim-only burial site in NSW, the Canterbury-Bankstown Express reports.

It will have the capacity for 44,312 internments and will be set on Greendale Road, Bringelly.

The plans have already been approved but modifications to a development application are currently being assessed by Liverpool Council.

"The Garden Cemetery will be the first not-for-profit company to provide a contemporary, holistic and ethical burial solution for all Muslims," a website for the cemetery says.

"First release 1,000 double-plots are available for Muslims to pre-purchase now.

"The Garden Cemetery will undertake its duties under the guidance of being Sharia-compliant and will be the first eco-friendly cemetery in Sydney to embrace and nurture the wonderful natural environment we are blessed to be operate in."

Pre-purchase plots are currently being offered for the discounted upfront cost of $7500.

Some Sydney cemetery's already feature Muslim-only areas but this will be the first cemetery solely dedicated to Muslims.

The development was originally rejected by Liverpool City Council in 2011, but the decision was overturned by the Land and Environment Court, which approved the masterplan.
