Man charged over stabbing death of pet dog in Perth park

It's difficult to understand how anyone could do something so cruel - stab a dog to death in front of its shocked owner.

Just after 6pm Wednesday at Apple Blossom Reserve in Mirrabooka, the owner, identified only as Bridgette, was out walking her two dogs, something she did every night.

Her beloved four year old Labrador, Luna, was off the leash when a man approached, also walking a dog.

As Luna playfully approached the man, Bridgette saw him crouch over Luna, then walk away.

Her heart sank when she saw Luna fall onto her side.

"I just picked her up and lay her on top of me and felt her heart and I couldn't feel anything. When I couldn't feel her breathing I knew she was gone," her heartbroken owner said.

The much-loved family pet bled out in Bridgette's arms while the man who stabbed her took off across the park.

"For this to happen, it's gut-wrenching for everyone involved," police officer Neil Morton Smith said.

"We're desperate to get some information from the public and speak to the person responsible."

As Bridgette struggles to come to terms with what's happened, police are flooding the area, hunting Luna's killer.

Police have charged a 37 year old man from Mirrabooka with Cruelty to an Animal relating to the death of Luna.

He has been bailed to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on 15 June.
