'One in 30 million' orange lobster escapes the dinner plate

A "one in 30 million" orange lobster has managed to avoid becoming someone's dinner.

The BBC reports the manager of a seafood store in Wales found a rare orange lobster in his catch.

Tristan Wood, who runs The Lobster Pot in Holyhead, said she stood out from all the other lobsters due to her bright orange hue.

“I knew she was unique and I had to save her from the pot,” he said.

“In all the years I have been working in sustainable lobster fisheries, this is the first time I have seen a bright orange individual like this one.”

Mr Wood gave the crustacean to Anglesey Sea Zoo’s lobster hatchery.

The Zoo’s director Frankie Hobro said not only was her addition exciting due to the rarity of the breed but mainly because she was carrying eggs.

"We are eagerly anticipating the release of her larvae to see if they are also as orange as the female, and to see as the juveniles develop and grow, if any of them are bright orange,” he said.

The University of Maine’s Lobster Institute in the US have previously said the odds of finding a bright orange lobster are one in 30 million.
