Furious Anthony Mundine rejects claims he backs violence against women

Controversial Muslim boxer Anthony Mundine has defended his comments made in a YouTube interview with Mark Latham saying he does not condone violence against women.

“To the bull***t that's out there that I said you can beat a woman as long as you don't cause injury is the most disturbing & bull***t thing I've seen ! I'm totally against any violence against woman (sic) period !!!” he posted on Facebook.

It follows an interview the boxer made on Mark Latham’s Outsiders YouTube show in which Mr Mundine discussed his views on Islam.

While Mr Mundine supported the Koran’s views saying, “You know the Arab toothbrush, little stick, that is a beating, but you cannot harm the lady, cause any injury or any bruising.”

Mr Latham asked why the Koran needed to encourage physicality and suggested some men, in a moment of anger, could go “over the top”.

He also asked whether the Koran could be changed to make it clear Islam did not support domestic violence.

But Mr Mundine tried to say that translating Arabic into English meant words were lost in translation. “I looked up on this and that word beat, in the Arabic language, the way it’s pronounced isn’t really beat.”

The interview follows a video posted last month where two Muslim women, one identified as Sydney teacher Reem Allouche, said a man is permitted to hit a woman as an act of discipline.
