'Its whole face was covered in blood': Family left devastated after watching rottweilers maul pet alpaca Lily to death

A heartbroken family is mourning the loss of their pet alpaca after it was savagely attacked and killed by two local rottweilers.

Alana and Chris Gidley, from Oakford in WA, say a two hour wait for the ranger to arrive left them at the mercy of the aggressive dogs.

At the Gidley family's semi-rural property, they had two alpacas as pets.

On the night of Anzac Day, Alana and Chris Gidley watched 9-year-old family pet Lily brutally mauled to death by rottweilers they say lived nearby.

“I shone my torch over to try and see where it was,” said Alana.

“It lifted its head up and its whole face was covered in blood.”

“It [the dog] was just pulling her from side to side. It was horrible, horrible,” said Chris.

The Gidleys don't want to think about what could have happened to their young family and other pets.

Alana and Chris say they waited more than two hours for the ranger to arrive. The whole time the dogs watched and waited.

However, Serpentine Jarrahdale Council president Cr John Erren says it only took one hour and four minutes for a ranger to respond.

A neighbour stepped in to shoot one of the marauding dogs.

The second dog was impounded. The Council's investigating the alpaca attack to decide the dog's fate.
