Nearly 'an unthinkable disaster': Car carrier smashes into Victorian childcare centre

A car carrier has taken out a power pole and smashed through the fence of a childcare centre northeast of Melbourne.

Witnesses at the scene claim that the driver of the truck was not in the vehicle when it crashed into the Ferntree Gully Children’s Centre.

"It's cut off all power in the area and causing a bit of chaos," witness Chris Farace told 7 News Online.

"The truck is literally in the play area of the childcare center, so could very well have been an unthinkable disaster."

The carrier had two vehicles on the top level and it’s understood that more cars may have been preparing to load in when the driverless truck's brakes failed.

There were children present at the Ferntree Gully Children's Centre when the out-of-control truck came smashing through the fence.

Fortunately none of them were outside when the truck stopped in the middle of the playground.

No injuries have been reported.
