Students and teachers among six killed in Japanese avalanche

An avalanche near a ski village north of Tokyo has hit a group of Japanese students and teachers, injuring some and possibly killing others.

There were six among the group reportedly showing no vital signs and three are reported missing, according to Japan's Kyodo news agency.

There were about 70 people in the area at the time, many of that group said to be students and teachers.

The group of senior students were reportedly in the area on a mountain climbing trip.

Rescue and emergency personnel have been deployed to the area to assist the injured and search for the missing.

The avalanche struck Monday morning local time at the Nasu Onsen family ski resort, near the town of Nasu in Tochigi prefecture.
