Police seize 5000 illegal firearms bound for Aussie bikies

Police have announced that they seized the largest ever shipment of illegal firearms, organised by bikie gangs and bound for Australia.

The almost 5000 weapons that were seized by US authorities in Sepetember last year and were said to be heading for a Melbourne port to be distributed across the country to bikie gangs.

They included more than 100 military grade assault rifles, handguns and other firearms.

Many of the weapons had their serial numbers scratched off, suggesting that they may have been involved in previous crimes or may be stolen weapons.

A three-year, joint operation between US and Australian authorities reportedly led to the find.

News Corp has reported that news of the bust was released as part of the latest statistics into the progress of the National Anti-Gang Squad.

In the past three years the squad has arrested 1,000 outlaw motorcyclists, with a further 3,000 having charges laid against them.

More than 5,500 illegal weapons have been seized, federal authorities have revealed.

In 2016 alone, $1.4 million of bikie cash was obtained by the squad.
