Ivanka Trump's $3,900 dress causes social media frenzy

For her father’s first address to a joint session of Congress, Ivanka Trump took off her choker and bright red blazer that she wore to the White House earlier on Tuesday and changed into yet another youthful look.

The first daughter opted for a magenta dress from French fashion designer Roland Mouret, which retails for $3,900 (US$2,995).

From the brand’s Resort 2017 collection, The Rawlings Dress in orchid pink, is according to the product’s description, “an easy choice for that evening affair when you think you have ‘nothing to wear'” and the flourishes also make it the “‘It’ dress for nighttime soirees.

The design features an asymmetric neckline with a black spaghetti strap.

Ivanka, who moved to Washington, DC following President Donald Trump’s inauguration and has been an active member in his administration, shared an image of herself at the White House with her husband, Jared Kushner, before heading to the Capitol building.

Social media took note of the fact that Ivanka’s seemingly able to flaunt her arms and shoulders at the Capitol without controversy, whereas former first lady Michelle Obama was criticised for doing the same.

"What's with @IvankaTrump black bra strap. Not very classy," shared one disapproving tweeter.

Another asked: "I'm sorry if this makes me a bad feminist but what is @IvankaTrump wearing? This is not a nightclub. #Jointsession"

"Remember all that crap about Michelle Obama showing her arms & if it was appropriate? Well, behold Ivanka and her shoulders," a third commented.

Ivanka’s stepmother was subjected to a similar critique for her $12,500 sequined skirt suit ensemble.

Melania Trump’s Michael Kors ensemble was called “inappropriate” for the function and more fit a New Year’s Eve party or “da club.”
