'Truly terrible': Finance department recruitment video panned

C'mon everybody get excited about finance and paleo pear and banana bread.

If you have ever thought about joining a graduate program in one of the many exciting bureaucracies in Canberra, then look no further.

The federal Department of Finance has released a riveting video to show you what it's like to work in the federal Department of Finance.

The three-minute-and-six-second video shows what it's like to do the enthralling work with facts and figures, as portrayed by some of the department's vibrant young employees.

Setting the scene in the modern office building that is home to the department, some bureaucrats enjoy a casual conversation about presentations and paleo breakfast items.

"I'm so stoked for our presentation to the executives this afternoon," says one eager staffer to another.

Their discussion is politely interrupted by Claire – a young woman hungry for breakfast.

"Hey guys, I'm just heading downstairs for my paleo pear and banana bread. Would you like to join me?"

An older staffer responds, "No thanks, it's a little bit fancy for me.

"I'm actually off to an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff network meeting."

It goes on from there, all acted out by the talented department staff.

According to Fairfax, the video cost $37,400 to create, the invoice coming from the creative agency Together Creative.

The production group describes itself as a "famously good creative agency" that develops "head-turning campaigns".

Together Creative has also produced recruitment videos for the Department of Social Services.

Advertising expert Dee Madigan gave her critique to Fairfax, calling the video "truly terrible".

"The execution is atrocious. The only thing worse than the execution are the performances," said the creative director at Campaign Edge, a Labor-associated agency.

"Any department that approved that ad, you just wouldn't want to work for. They should be asking for their money back."
