Entire Queensland class struck down by gastro bug

A massive gastro outbreak is quickly spreading in Brisbane’s Northside area, with 40 children from one school struck down.

Two of those students have been taken to hospital as doctors warn the strain is highly contagious.

Year seven student Bailey Vella started vomiting at 1.30am on Thursday morning, but couldn’t stop.

“I just instantly called the home doctor … the doctor said he had three other families in the street he was seeing,” mum Natalie Vella said.

The St Pius Catholic Primary school student is one of 40 infected with the stomach bug, including an entire year two class.

That classroom has now been closed for cleaning after the initial outbreak began spreading 10 days ago.

“At our clinic we must’ve seen somewhere between 50 to 100 cases I’m aware of,” Dr Richard Kidd said.

“One of our doctors ended up in hospital … this is a strain that somehow must be quite new, everyone’s getting it.”

Doctors say the youngest infected patient was a one-year-old and the oldest, a 96-year-old.

Test results are due back on Friday to determine the type of strain quickly spreading.
