Thief who stole bank card from dying car crash victim sent to jail

A thief who stole a bank card from a person dying at a Queensland crash scene has been sent to jail.

Matt Clark died after being hit by a car near Hervey Bay late last year.

Soon afterwards Mr Clark's wife noticed 11 transactions on the credit card in Maryborough and Hervey Bay, and contacted police.

Shannon Davis pleaded guilty to stealing and fraud, and will spend at least six months behind bars.

The magistrate said it was the worst stealing case he had seen in his career.

The court heard the 28-year-old went on a spending spree within hours of Mr Clark's death.

"Obviously it's a crime that has shocked and disgusted me and no doubt the community," Detective Senior Sergeant Mick Pollit said.

"To think these two low lives came across the scene and ignored what any decent person would do and stole his credit card is beyond belief."

In December last year, Mr Clark's widow said it was a devastating time, but thanked police for their round-the-clock efforts.
