Queensland world record attempt of 73 hours of continuous lawn bowls

A lawn bowls enthusiast from outback Queensland is attempting to set a world record by playing continuously for 73 hours.

Cloncurry Bowls Club manager Shayne Barwick commenced on Friday morning and will keep on rolling until early Monday morning, with the challenge lasting over three days with no sleep.

Barwick is hoping to raise funds for his cherished club.

His initial goal for the funds raised was to go towards a verandah out the front of the bowls club.

However there has been a slight hitch in his plan.

Tune into Seven Sunrise on Monday morning to see Shayne Barwick break through the 73-hour mark.

Barwick reportedly thought the number 73 was the record for the hours played consecutively however it was actually the age of the lawn bowler.

As it stands there is no record for continuous games of lawn bowls for a single player.

"I really put my foot in it," Mr Barwick told the ABC.

Despite the length of play, Barwick is confident he will succeed and the verandah and disability ramp will be added to the club.

"I've just been trying to the get the community involved in it again," he told the ABC, adding he has tried everything but nothing so far has worked.

"So I thought well maybe if I sacrificed myself they might get into bowls."

Every four hours Barwick is allowed a 10 minute break and ambulance crews are on scene monitoring the attempt.

Officials are also on scene to ensure the attempt in legitimate.

Meals and drinks are brought to him on the lawn during shots.

Staff at the bowls club said a large crowd had gathered last night to watch him play and even more are expected tonight.
