Same-sex marriage proposal goes viral due to bystander's delight

A same-sex marriage proposal has gone viral after a photo of the romantic moment captured the delighted reaction of a bystander.

Jessica Rodriguez told her girlfriend, Chelsea Miller, that they were attending a gala at The Art Institute of Chicago.

After leading Ms Miller to the sculpture court inside the museum, Ms Rodriguez admitted that there was no gala and that she’d brought her there for another reason.

In an Instagram post, the law student revealed the words behind the proposal.

"Baby I lied there's no gala. I brought you here because of our love for art,” she said.

“If someone could describe our love it could only be done through a work of art. It is happy, fun, chaotic, inspiring and strong. I want to keep discovering art for the rest of my life by your side.”

As Ms Rodriguez prepared to drop down on one knee, friends of the couple appeared at an upstairs balcony holding a sign that read, “Chelsea Miller, will you marry me?”

Surprised and in shock, Ms Miller accepted and as their pair embraced, they didn’t notice the crowd that had gathered around them.

Looking back through photos of the moment, they spotted one woman whose reaction made the day even sweeter.

The older woman was seated on a bench a few metres away from the couple and gasped in delight while holding her hand over her heart.

“I don’t think we realised she was there,” Ms Rodriguez told news.com.au.

“We were going over the photos my friend Ed Sanchez took (and) we discovered that gem with her sweet reaction. It really made that photo even more special.”

Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James retweeted the photo to her followers, congratulating the pair on their announcement.

“I think we are making progress in the world to be more accepting. We definitely appreciate that,” she said.

“We have loved every single sweet comment from around the world.”

Ms Rodriguez announced to her Twitter followers that they have set their wedding date for June 30, 2018.
