Young girl set alight, thrown in well after resisting attempted rape: reports

WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT:A young girl who fought back when two men attempted to rape her was set on fire then tossed in a dry well according to reports.

The 10-year-old is in hospital currently fighting for her life after the shocking attack in Jharkhand, in eastern India, the Hindustan Times reports.

It’s reported the child was playing outside her home in the small village when the alleged attackers approached her with lollies.

When the young girl refused she was then subsequently dragged to a nearby stone-crushing unit, where the men reportedly stripped her and attempted to rape her according to the Hindustan Times.

When the girl attempted to escape they then reportedly poured kerosene on her, set her alight then threw her into the well.

Police reportedly discovered a jerry can, matchsticks and burned clothes belonging to the child nearby.

A woman passing by heard the cries of the child who was later rescued from the well by villagers.

She was then reportedly taken to hospital with severe burns.

According to the Indian Express the child suffered burns to 60 percent of her body.

Various local media reports the two men have been charged with attempted rape and attempted murder.

It’s believed five other suspects have been detained for questioning in the matter.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sumeet Kumar told a local newspaper: “The sequence of events is yet to be established".

"Nobody seems to have seen the incident, even though it was daylight and the place is not secluded.”
