Toddler hit by reversing car dies in hospital

A toddler has tragically died after being hit by a reversing car in the NSW Illawarra region.

Emergency crews raced to a Kiama caravan park on Monday afternoon after the 18-month-old girl was hit by a car.

According to witnesses, a woman aged in her 30s was reversing the vehicle when the toddler was struck around 3.30pm.

The little girl sustained serious chest and abdominal injuries in the accident.

Paramedics tried to stabilize the girl at the Ocean Street scene for an estimated 90 minutes before she was flown to Sydney’s Children’s Hospital in Randwick in a critical condition.

Sadly the girl died a few hours later.

A report on the toddler’s death will now be prepared for the coroner.

Officers from the Lake Illawarra Local Area Command have commenced an investigation into the child’s death and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
