Man charged after four women pushed onto Melbourne train tracks

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a knife-wielding rampage at a Melbourne train station which injured five women.

Three victims are currently in The Alfred Hospital in stable condition after they were attacked in the bizarre daylight ambush at Glenhuntly train station about 11am on Sunday.

A 47-year-old Carnegie man has been charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury, affray and making threats to kill.

Four women, including one in her 80s, were pushed off the platform on to the tracks during the attack.

Victoria Police alleged the accused stabbed the first woman's handbag with his knife and the weapon snapped in half.

An elderly woman suffered head and leg injuries while another woman, aged in her 60s, suffered facial injuries, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

The fourth woman was with a child at the time. She ran away and got onto a train to escape.

Witness Annabelle Jiles told 7 News the woman in her 80s was standing on her platform with a trolley when a man approached her.

"And he just walked down and hit her in the face," Ms Jiles said.

Victoria Police Sergeant Jason Venturoni said it was lucky no one was more seriously injured or killed.

"Very lucky that no one was more seriously injured or killed. It was a very serious incident and could have resulted in the death of these ladies," he said.

Good samaritans at the station worked quickly, helping the women up from the tracks to safety, as others bravely confronted their attacker.
