Family left traumatised after young police officer stabbed in face

The father of a young police officer allegedly stabbed in the face during a Melbourne home invasion says the attack has left his son's young family traumatised.

Senior Constable Daniel Yeoman was not in court on Thursday to face the man who allegedly stabbed him between the eyes, but his father and cousins, also police officers, were there on his behalf.

The victim’s father Dave Yeoman, a detective senior sergeant formally based at the major collision unit, recalled receiving the type of call that he has often had to deliver himself.

“Nobody wants to get that phone call, it's something parents dread, especially parents of emergency services workers," the victim's father said.

Daniel Yeoman is a husband and has four children and his father said the youngsters are a big concern for relatives now.

“The recovery is going to be long and arduous, and needless to say they are very traumatised as to what's occurred."

“Physically the injuries will heal, emotionally, that takes a little bit longer."

Jade Hunia, 19, allegedly attacked the Senior Constable Yeoman on Saturday.

Senior Constable Yeoman sustained a broken eye socket and severed nerve.

On Thursday, Hunia appeared briefly via videolink in court and said little during the hearing.

He replied "no" when asked by the magistrate whether he was withdrawing from drugs or had any medical issues that needed to be addressed.

The 19-year-old was supported in court by a woman, believed to be a relative, and a small group of friends.

He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody to appear in court on February 16.
