Man climbing onto Sydney Harbour Bridge pylon causes traffic delays during evening peak

Traffic was stalled on the Sydney Harbour Bridge for hours during the Monday night peak after a man tried to climb up onto one of the southern pylons.

A NSW Police spokesman said two southbound lanes were closed for some time while the man was climbing onto the structure.

He said that once police took him down from the bridge all of the lanes were reopened.

The spokesman said that the man, who is believed to be suffering from mental health issues, was taken to hospital for assessment.

Seven News understands the man has been taken into custody.

Police officers were forced to climb on to the pylon after the man and negotiated with him before getting him down, 7 News understands.

Buses heading across the Harbour Bridge were delayed and traffic was slow for several hours following the incident.
