Good Samaritan may lose hearing after having ear bitten off trying to stop wild brawl

A father-of-two still does not know if he will hear properly again after having part of his ear bitten off during a wild pub brawl.

Rhys Greig stepped in to help a grandfather who was being beaten up on the Central Coast, with police forced to use capsicum spray to subdue the group.

Beau Stangl has been charged over his involvement in the vicious brawl which left Mr Greig with a permanent deformity.

"Someone latched onto my ear and bit my ear off," Mr Greig told 7News.

Mr Greig was at Northlakes Tavern in Charmhaven watching his partner Helen sing karaoke.

When he saw a 54-year old grandfather allegedly being attacked, he did not hesitate to intervene.

"I've looked outside and they were belting his dad up so I went out trying to help him out," said Mr Greig.

As he tried to break the brawl up Mr Greig said the group turned on him, punching and kicking him before the sickening bite on his ear happened, as his partner watched in disbelief.

"She (Helen) was getting held back by a security guard and watched the whole thing," said Mr Greig.

Police have charged two men over the brawl including Stangl.

However, they are yet to charge the person responsible for biting part of Mr Greig's ear off.

Once they do, the offender is almost certain to face jail time.

"That particular wound is what we call really excessive," Wyong Police Inspector Colin Lott said.

Mr Greig will spend several more days in hospital, but doctors have not been able to save his ear.

"(I've) lost part of my body so it can't be that great (for me)," Mr Greig added.
