Too late to evacuate: Bushfire threatening Western Sydney residents

Aerial waterbombers "Southern Belle" and "Thor" are assisting crews battling an out-of-control blaze threatening homes in Sydney's west.

Londonderry residents in Fourth Avenue, Spence Road, Llandilo Road and Mayo Road have been urged to seek shelter, as it is too late to evacuate.

Waterbombing aircraft and Rural Fire Service crews are battling to control the blaze as the temperatures in the area approach 30 degrees.

"Emergency Warning. A bush fire is burning near The Northern Rd, Londonderry, and is out of control," Rural Fire Service said in a statement.

An Emergency Warning is the highest bushfire threat level, according to the NSW RFS emergency warning site.

The aerial waterbombers "Southern Belle", a DC-10, and "Thor", a C130 Hercules, are assisting crews on the ground as thick smoke billows over the city's west.

The bushfire has also completely restricted Northern Road traffic and threatening to destroy Castlereagh Nature Reserve.

A very high fire danger rating was issued for the Greater Sydney region because of warm and windy weather.

Meanwhile, patients at the Nepean hospital were also evacuated on Sunday following another fire caused by machinery in an engine room.

A spokesman for the NSW fire service confirmed that the fire was put out with a small extinguisher and patients have since returned to the hospital.
