Man shot dead by police after stabbing woman, 'dousing her in petrol'
Police shot a man dead after he repeatedly stabbed a woman and doused her in petrol in a horrific domestic violence incident on the NSW North Coast.
The 28-year-old woman, whose name has not yet been released, called for help from her neighbour's home on Magnolia Place IN Port Macquarie on Thursday night.
Authorities arrived to find the woman lying in a pool of blood in the neighbour’s garage around 6pm.
She was treated at the scene and then rushed to Port Macquarie Base Hospital, where she was said to be in a serious condition on Thursday night.
The horror attack triggered a manhunt on surrounding streets, with the 36-year-old accused later spotted driving along the Pacific Highway.
The man was shot dead by officers “following a confrontation with police”.
A NSW Police statement a critical incident investigation has been launched into the shooting.
"A critical incident team from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident including the discharge of a police firearm," the statement said.
"That investigation will be subject to independent review."
It is believed the victim and the accused met on internet dating site Tinder, the Daily Telegraph has reported.
A report about the man's death will be prepared for the coroner.
