'G'day mum it's Ian': Murderer leaves parents voicemail day after killing them

A Victorian court today released the chilling message a son left on his parents’ answering machine, a day after he'd brutally murdered them.

Ian Thomas, 38, had already murdered his parents, Pauline and William Thomas when left this voicemail.

“G’day mum it’s Ian, I’m just ringing up to let you know I made it safely down to Melbourne today, despite the weather,” he said knowing all too well that they were already lying lifeless and wrapped in blankets.

“Umm in the meantime mum, say g’day to dad for us and I’ll umm speak to you soon. Love you mum, bye.”

The court heard that on April 20, 2013, Thomas strangled his mother first, then he lay in wait for his father before shooting him and bludgeoning him with the handle of a pick axe.

Thomas was convicted of both their murders but his defence attorney told the Supreme Court his client was provoked into the coldblooded murder of his father and didn’t deserve a life in prison.

Thomas was found guilty of his parents' murders in 2013.

He claimed his father was physically and emotionally abusive despite two of Thomas’ four siblings dening the claims of an unhappy childhood.

No evidence of Thomas’ psychological state was given to the court and the judge remained confused about the motive for murdering his mother.

Thomas has already spent three-and-a-half years in custody since his arrest.
