'Poster boy for helmet use': Dad 'detaches forehead from bone' in horrific bike crash

The wife of a man who gouged a massive chunk from his own forehead during a botched half pipe stunt has stressed the importance of helmet use.

Freshwater resident Paul Marney, 44, smashed both his cheekbones and eye sockets and seriously damaged his optical nerve after going face first over his handle bars at a skate park earlier this week.

“Our children always wear helmets, I don’t know why he wasn’t — something good has to come out of this,” said Mrs Marney, who is separated from her partner.

“Paul is a poster boy for why you should always wear a helmet.

“I want people to realise how a helmet can save your life or help prevent serious injuries.”

Royal North Shore doctors asked the mother of three to seek out any videos of the accident to help them understand his injuries.

The father of three is facing a lengthy recovery period after fracturing his neck and skull.

His forehead was left detached from the bone and this week he underwent seven hours of surgery where he had titanium plates inserted into his face, according to Mrs Marney.

“He has 70 staples in his head and is still weak on his right side,” she said.

“His sight is looking bad in his left eye and they’ve pretty much determined no sight.”

Mrs Marney has launched a crowd-funding site that has raised more than $2000 for her husband’s recovery.
