'Pass it on': Incredible act of kindness at NSW servo prompts search for 'John'

The hunt is on for a mystery Good Samaritan after an incredible act of kindness at a NSW service station that has left an Albury man grinning from ear to ear.

Tyson Crawley, a local carpenter and musician, was on his way to work just after 6am on Friday when he stopped to get diesel and some ice coffees, only to make a shock discovery on reaching the till.

The 30-year-old had transferred all his money into a new bank account the night before, but realised he did not have the new bankcard with him to pay the bill, which totalled almost $110.

He tried to use a card for a joint account but could not remember the pin number and two attempts to guess it were unsuccessful.

With his dog barking wildly outside and anxiety growing that he’d be late for work, Mr Crawley says he was rapidly running out of options.

Then in walked the mystery Good Samaritan, who insisted, despite protestations, that he would cover it.

"I can help a brother out, can't I?" the customer asked Mr Crawley, who said he was “absolutely stunned”.

“I couldn’t’ t believe it, it totalled $110! not a sum we kind of just throw away. He continually convinced me it was ok, after I ran out of options, I ever so gratefully accepted,” Mr Crawley wrote in a Facebook post.

But the story didn’t end there. Seeking a way to pay the money back, Mr Crawley asked the customer to write down his contact details.

“The attendant handed him the receipt, she passed him a pen, he wrote down on it, folded it and handed it to me.

“With mass amounts of being overwhelmed and grateful, I said "please take a photo with me", he said "sure!"...He then left and said, "Have a good day".

It was only minutes later when Mr Crawley returned to his ute that he discovered there were no contact details written on the receipt, just the name John and the words ‘pass it on’.

“It’s just such a bizarre thing to happen,” he told Yahoo7.

“It’s what I always try to teach the world, be kind, look after each other and don’t compete – and this guy just comes into my life one day.

“So many people have said it has restored their faith in humanity.”

The story has not only prompted social media users to use the hashtags ‘FindJohn’ and ‘BeLikeJohn,’ but also to ‘pass on’ the kindness the stranger showed.

Mr Crawley signed-off his Facebook post, “Please be beautiful people, and remember it's not about keeping up with the joneses, having the biggest house, most expensive car, the largest bank account, but work with each other, after all, what is money compared to the quality of human life?”
