Brothers admit cowardly attack on Kenyan man

Two brothers who viciously attacked a Kenyan man, continuing the assault as the victim lay unconscious on the ground, have pleaded guilty in a Melbourne court.

James and Matthew Bruce had been drinking at a Chapel Street bar in June last year with their father and another brother when they passed the victim on the street.

The court heard James uttered a racial slur, sparking an argument which quickly turned violent.

Shocking footage of the attack shows James punch and kick the victim before shoving him to the ground, while Matthew lines up and kicks the victim in the groin.

The court was told James Bruce knew the victim was unconscious but he kept up the attack, until the third brother intervened.

The 33-year-old victim suffered two broken teeth but declined to submit a victim impact statement to the court.

It was established the brothers had consumed a “significant amount” of alcohol before the attack took place.

“It’s more by good fortune than good management that (the victim’s) injuries weren’t more serious,” the magistrate said.

The brothers had bail extended to October, when they will be sentenced.
