'Enough is enough': One in five bus drivers attacked on the job

Alarming new figures show one in five Queensland bus drivers have been physically assaulted on the job, while almost every driver has been abused at work.

The startling statistics have forced drivers to rally for better protection and harsher penalties for those behind the abuse.

“They’ve had enough,” Transport Workers Union spokesperson Peter Biagini said.

“Many of them are wondering if it’s worthwhile staying in this industry.”

While 96 per cent of drivers conceded they’d been abused on the job, more than a third said they witnessed assaults between passengers.

“It’s scary, anything from being king hit in the back of the head, being spat on, being verbally abused,” Queensland Bus Industry’s David Tape said.

CCTV footage shows some of the dangers drivers face, with a violent fight breaking out between schoolgirls in Mackay, while other vision shows single attacks.

“These drivers are everyday men and women who turn up to work facing the unfair reality that they could be next,” Mr Biagini said.

“They’re now demanding the State Government and Translink get on board.”

More than 5000 drivers have joined a petition calling for safety screens, cashless systems and better CCTV in a bid to ensure their safety at work.

“Enough is enough,” Mr Biagini said.
