'That guy deserves a medal’: Injured police officer helps woman trapped in wreckage

An injured officer who rescued another driver “deserves a medal” after the woman crashed into his police vehicle, forcing it to roll.

Neighbours were woken by an almighty bang and found the Corio Sergeant scrambling from his vehicle to help the other driver on Friday night.

“All he said was ‘I can’t believe she did a U-turn in front of me’,” witness Angela Mayberry said.

“He was very shaken up, he had blood coming out of his head.”

Despite his head injury, the sergeant rushed to the woman’s aid.

“He’s kicked the passenger door, climbed out, and then went straight over to the other car,” Ms Mayberry said.

Another witness described the sergeant’s efforts as “incredible”.

“That guy deserves a medal for being injured and still doing his job,” Steve Corbett said.

The sergeant was responding to a call for back up when the two vehicles collided on the Princes Highway.

The police car rolled “multiple times” as nearby residents claim the intersection is notorious for U-turn offending.

“I reckon a great big metal barrier all the way along needs to go there,” Ms Mayberry said.

The sergeant was released from hospital on Saturday while the woman remains at The Alfred Hospital.
