Impossible burger: Ground-breaking meat substitute hits the market fooling protein lovers

Literally the impossible has been achieved and of course it involves a juicy, mouth-watering burger.

Franken-scientists have managed to manufacture a meat-free burger they claim is so delicious even the most discerning modern-day caveman would be left salivating and satisfied.

The carefully crafted burger has been five years in development. The makers claim the burger looks, smells, tastes, cooks and even bleeds like the real deal.

The burger aptly named the “Impossible Burger” is not only setting social media on fire but it’s also a potential game changer in modern dining.

The new burger was launched this week in New York City at David Chang’s Momofuku Nishi restaurant, sending foodies into a frenzy.

The burger also boasts positive environmental impacts as it has the potential to reduce society's dependency on livestock.

“Because we don’t use animals, we can make it using 95% less land, 74% less water, and with 87% less greenhouse gas emissions," the company website states.

“Oh, and without any hormones or antibiotics.”

In their bid to recreate the compounds found in beef the developers we able to replicate the same compounds found in plants and duplicate them.

The ground-breaking discovery occurred when the scientists were able to isolate a molecule called “heme”.

Heme is what gives beef its unique flavour. It's an iron component that makes protein a red colour with a similar consistency of blood.

The same molecule does occur in plants and it’s the key to making the burger tastes so similar to a actual meat.

The company website explains what the main components inside the burger are, “That’s why our ingredients are simple things you know, like wheat, coconut oil, and potato protein, along with one you might not know – heme.”

“While super abundant in meat, it’s a basic building block of life on Earth, including plants. And it’s the magic ingredient that makes our meat look, cook, and taste gloriously meaty.”

This meat alternative is so impressive, it even sizzles when it cooks, again imitating actual meat.

Now the same research company has announced plans to develop other products setting their sights on “virtually any meat — beef, pork, chicken, fish — as well as cheeses, yoghurt, milk, and cream — all from plants.”

With the Impossible Burger it seems the impossible has been made possible.
