Man charged with murder over Hobart woman's stabbing in grocery store

A man has been charged for fatally stabbed a woman at a popular North Hobart supermarket about midday on Saturday.

The 66-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed in the neck eight times at the North Hobart Grocer on the Elizabeth Street cafe strip, and taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital but later died.

A 34-year-old Claremont man has been charged with murder and robbery and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Sunday.

"At about 12.20pm this afternoon Tasmania Police received a call regarding an incident in North Hobart related to a female being stabbed in the neck," Inspector John Ward told the ABC.

Police said workers from shops and cafes along the strip were upset by the incident and have provided witness statements.
