Man charged after alleged car fire attack on NSW police station

A man has been charged after he allegedly set himself on fire and drove his car into a police station in Sydney's west on Thursday night.

Police claim the man allegedly parked a car in the driveway of Merrylands Police Station, on Memorial Avenue, which ignited as officers approached.

It's alleged the offender drove down the driveway into the roller door of the car park under the police station.

Police were able to extinguish the fire.

Peter Zhurawel was named earlier this week as the alleged accused.

The man suffered serious burns and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remains under police guard; his condition is reported to be stable.

Following investigations by officers attached to Holroyd Local Area Command, the 61-year-old man has been charged with destroying or damaging property with intention of endangering life.

In the chilling footage, a car is seen parked parked in the driveway of the station after 9pm.

Movement is seen inside the car before the man pours accelerant over himself, setting himself and the car on fire.

A bright flash of light flashes across the screen and a fire is blazing inside of the vehicle.

Officers rush from the police station but the car is rammed into the wall of the underground parking lot.

Police will be seeking a bedside court hearing in the coming days, depending on the medical condition of the accused.
