Gold Coast locals chase down driver involved in dangerous crash

Gold Coast locals chased down and subdued a man allegedly carrying firearms while behind the wheel of a stolen car.

A 33-year-old man was driving a red Hyundai allegedly stolen from Brisbane Airport late on Wednesday afternoon.

Police first noticed the alleged stolen car in Southport but the driver sped off.

Authorities then saw him on Frank St in Labrador just before 6pm Wednesday.

The driver got caught up in heavy traffic before he allegedly drove through a red light, passed an intersection and drove up on to a footpath, smashing into a blue car.

He tried to flee on foot but brave locals chased him down and detained him.

The driver of the blue vehicle was a 22-year-old woman from NSW and was taken to hospital for observation.

Authorities later discovered a sawn-off shot gun was found stashed inside the car.

The man is charged with a string of offences and has been denied bail.

He is due to appear at Southport Court on Thursday.
