'Monster' gets 13 years for bashing stepson

A Sydney mother hopes her former partner dies in prison for attacking her baby son in a vicious assault that left him disabled.

Hospital machines kept the nine-month-old boy alive for three weeks after Eduardo Varas attacked him in a Lalor Park home two years ago.

The 33-year-old man was sentenced to 13 years for attacking his infant stepson and was given a non-parole period of eight and a half years in Penrith Local Court.

On July 6, 2014, the mother left her young boy with Varas at a Koorool Ave home. Upon returning she found the boy's “lifeless body surrounded by paramedics”.

The little boy's injuries were so severe that the left side of his skull was removed and a permanent shunt put into his brain.

A leading trauma doctor from Westmead Children's Hospital says the baby boy's injuries revealed he suffered at least three acts of violence and may have been swung with force and smashed into a hard surface.

"Severe shaking, at least one blow to the abdomen and hitting the child with extreme force on the head with a hard object," the specialist said.

In court, Judge Rodney Madgewhick said: "In many respects some of the human suffering caused by a person who deliberately inflicts catastrophic harm on a small child is greater than if the child was killed."

Outside court the boy's mother was furious at the leniency of the sentence handed down.

"Absolutely disgusted and betrayed by the system, what he's done will never be erased," she said.

"He's a monster how can you look at someone that could do that to my baby."

Judge Madgewhick said Varas is in protective custody and will stay there because the child's real father is also in the prison system and authorities fear an imminent revenge attack on him.
