Afternoon News Presenter Jacqueline Felgate says being part of a newsroom is an exciting and dynamic place to work.

Jacqueline graduated from Tintern Girls Grammar School in 2000 before completing a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne.

She began working as a copygirl at the Herald Sun in 2003 where she answered phones, delivered papers to the editors and collected first editions from the print press. She secured a coveted cadetship in 2005 and began as the Herald Sun’s State Political Reporter that same year.

In January 2007 Jacqueline made the move into television news. She joined the Seven News Melbourne team in February 2012 and today is the Afternoon News Presenter and can be seen as a newsreader for the 6pm Seven News and Sunrise.

Jacqueline says her advice to those starting in the industry is determination and perseverance.

“Work the hardest,” she says. “I did work experience at scores of country newspapers while I was at school. While at university I worked overnight at the Herald Sun answering phones just to get my foot in the door. It’s very difficult to get a start in a major newsroom straight from university so be prepared to do just about anything to get a job.”

Jacqueline says she most enjoys the buzz of a breaking news story.

“Reporting or presenting live television is the biggest adrenaline rush. I love the breaking news element of the 4pm news – you never know what story might pop up over the hour, it’s such a dynamic and exciting bulletin! I am so privileged to work in an industry that is never boring.”

Jacqueline has been awarded a Melbourne Press Club Quill Award and has twice been highly commended in the RACV Transport category.

She says she is most proud of breaking a story which forced the government to change the law to make it illegal to consume alcohol while behind the wheel in Victoria, bringing the state into line with the rest of Australia.

When not working, Jacqueline enjoys spending time with her husband Michael and daughter Madison, attending footy games at the MCG, shopping and horse riding.
