Police release last photo taken of Australian man, moments before he vanished in Brazil

Police have released the last haunting picture of Western Australian man, before he mysteriously disappeared in Brazil.

Rye Hunt, 25, left Galeao International Airport in a taxi on May 21, after arranging to meet his travelling companion 30 minutes later, his family said in a statement on Sunday.

Police in Rio have released the image as they search for him, while his uncle and girlfriend prepare to fly to Brazil to help.

The last known image of Rye before he got into a taxi at Galeao International Airport on May 21 after a 'verbal altercation' with his friend and travel companion Mitch Sheppard.

Rye and his travel buddy had a row in the hours before he disappeared.

Some of Mr Hunt's personal effects have been found, but their location has not been released.

The friends had travelled through Asia and south America together.

Mr Hunt and his travel companion Mitch Sheppard, who he had spent seven weeks with through Southeast Asia and South America with, were captured on CCTV before they split up.

The pair reportedly had a 'verbal altercation' before Mr Hunt went to get a taxi, he is seen on the CCTV wearing a basketball jersey, white shorts and a flat brimmed cap.

Mr Hunt reportedly agreed to meet back up with his travel buddy, but instead got into a taxi and went to an unknown location.


"There appears to have been an argument between Rye and his travel partner in the airport," the statement said.

Mr Hunt's sister Romany Brodribb told AAP on Friday: "The international airport there - is, I believe - full of cameras, both inside and out,"

"And we have been really, really keen to see that footage."

Police have the exact details of where Mr Hunt and his friend were last together in the airport, and a description of what the 25-year-old was wearing.

Ms Brodribb, from Hobart, said the family was trying to stay positive and focus on the search.

"We're obviously terrified and worried about his safety and well being," she said.

"We're curious, we want to know more details, we're frustrated that we can't get details as fast as we want them."

A crowd-funding campaign has raised money to send Mr Hunt's uncle and his girlfriend to Rio to coordinate the search.

The brother of his travel companion will also go to offer support.

Tasmanian and West Australian police have been working with DFAT and Brazilian authorities to find Mr Hunt, who has not used his social media, email and bank accounts, and doesn't appear to have used his phone.
