One dead and schoolboy injured in horror crash

A woman has died and a teenager has been injured after a horrific crash at a pedestrian crossing at Carlton in Sydney's south.

The driver, in her 50s, was thrown from her car after hitting a schoolboy who is tonight recovering in St George Hospital with facial and arm injuries.

Just after 3.30pm emergency services were called to Carlton Parade after reports of an incident, the suburban intersection was transformed into a scene of carnage at school-time.

Witnesses reported seeing a red hatchback speeding past seconds before the crash.

Zac El Hassan told 7 News: "I looked to my left and there was a red car just flying and it didn't seem as if it was going to stop."

They described how the car lost control on a corner.

Shad El Hassan said: "I just saw the car hit the parked car, airborne, and land, I told everyone to call the ambos."

The boy was taken to St George Hospital and the 50-year-old female driver was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt.

She was thrown through the windscreen by the force of the impact.

Paramedics tried to save her but she died at the scene.

As word of the crash spread a distraught man believed to be a relative had to be held back by police at the heartbreaking scene.

Students walking home from school witnessed the crash and captured the scene on mobile phones.

"We seen the engine on the floor, we seen the lady on the floor laying down," Zac added.

Shad said: "It was a horrific accident, wasn't a great image."

The red car slammed into Prabin Ghimira's car parked outside his grocery shop.

"I was just popping inside the shop and I heard a big bang," he said.

Prabin said his car may have saved the lives of his two sons who were in the store at the time of the crash.

"My boys, if my car wasn't there, something bad going to happen," he added.

Witnesses told 7 News the car had sped up a one way street going the wrong way before the crash.
